Targa Resources Profit Jumps 38% in Q3 as Dividend Rises for 2027

The short version

Targa Resources made $658 million in profit in the third quarter of 2026, up 38% from a year earlier, and it plans to raise its annual dividend by 20% in 2027. The energy infrastructure company earned more because record volumes moved through its natural gas and liquids systems in the Permian Basin.

What happened

Targa Resources reported its third quarter 2026 results on November 5, 2026. Net income attributable to the company rose to $658.2 million, from $478.4 million in the same quarter of 2025. Revenue rose 34.9% to $5.599 billion, from $4.151 billion a year earlier.

Adjusted EBITDA, the company’s preferred measure of operating profit, rose 18% to $1.504 billion, from $1.275 billion a year earlier. It was down 6% from the second quarter, because lower marketing margins and weaker LPG exports partly offset the volume growth.

Volumes were the story of the quarter. Targa reported record Permian natural gas inlet volumes, along with record volumes in natural gas liquids transportation and fractionation, the process that separates mixed liquids into usable products. Permian natural gas volumes reached a record 7.5 billion cubic feet per day, up 5% from the second quarter and 14% from a year earlier.

Management raised its outlook for the full year. Targa now expects full year 2026 adjusted EBITDA of at least $6 billion, more than 21% above 2025. It still plans about $5 billion of growth capital spending in 2026, mostly on new infrastructure, plus about $250 million of maintenance spending.

The dividend news mattered too. Targa declared a third quarter dividend of $1.25 per share, up 25% from a year earlier, payable on November 17, 2026. Management also said it intends to recommend a 20% increase in the annual dividend for 2027, to $6.00 per share, or $1.50 per share each quarter starting in the first quarter of 2027, subject to board approval. The company bought back about $187 million of its own shares in the first nine months of 2026.

Total debt stood at $19.8 billion at the end of September, including $17.9 billion of senior unsecured notes. Targa shares slipped about 3% on the day, in line with a sharp fall across the wider US market. BP also reported a record $8.46 billion profit in the same quarter, helped by the same strong refining margins.

Why it matters for beginners

Targa is a midstream energy company. It does not drill for oil or gas. It gathers, processes, moves, and stores the fuel that producers pump out, and it charges fees for that service. That makes its results a useful window into how busy the US energy system is.

Three points are worth understanding. First, record volumes mean more fuel is flowing through its pipes and plants, which is good for a fee based business. Second, a raised dividend is a signal that management expects the cash to keep coming, though a planned increase is not a promise until the board approves it. Third, the $19.8 billion debt load is a reminder that pipeline companies borrow heavily to build, so higher borrowing costs can bite even when business is strong.

For a beginner, the lesson is simple. A company can report strong profit and still see its shares fall on the day, because the whole market can move more than one company’s news.

What to watch next

Watch whether Permian volumes keep growing in the fourth quarter, and whether the board approves the $1.50 quarterly dividend for early 2027. Also watch the full year result, due early next year, to see if Targa reaches its $6 billion earnings target. Energy prices and interest rates will shape both, since they affect demand for fuel and the cost of Targa’s large debt.
