EOG Profit Nearly Doubles in Q3 as Dividend Rises 8%

Direct answer

EOG Resources made $2.78 billion in profit in the third quarter of 2026, up 89% from a year earlier, and raised its quarterly dividend by 8% to $1.10 a share. Record oil and gas production and higher crude prices drove the result, and the company beat analyst profit forecasts.

What happened

EOG Resources, one of the largest shale oil and gas producers in the United States, reported its third quarter 2026 results on November 5, 2026. Net income reached $2.78 billion, or $5.33 per share, compared with $1.47 billion, or $2.70 per share, in the same quarter of 2025.

Adjusted net income, which strips out one off items, was $2.54 billion, or $4.87 per share. That beat the average analyst estimate of $4.46 per share, according to data compiled by LSEG and reported by Reuters.

Total revenue rose 46% to $8.55 billion, up from $5.85 billion a year earlier. The company produced a record 1.433 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, up about 10% from 1.301 million a year earlier. Its average realized crude oil price rose to $86.72 per barrel, compared with $65.95 per barrel a year earlier.

EOG generated $3.8 billion in operating cash flow and $2.2 billion in free cash flow. It paid $544 million in regular dividends and bought back $1.0 billion of its own shares during the quarter. Together, that returned about $1.54 billion to shareholders.

The board raised the regular quarterly dividend by 8% to $1.10 per share, an indicated annual rate of $4.40 per share. The dividend is payable on January 29, 2027, to shareholders of record on January 15, 2027. EOG has now paid a regular dividend for 28 consecutive years.

For the full year, EOG guided to capital spending of $6.3 billion to $6.7 billion and total production of 1.393 million to 1.425 million barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Why it matters for beginners

A dividend rise is a simple signal to watch. When a company raises its dividend, it is saying it expects to keep generating enough cash to pay shareholders more. EOG could do that here because it produced record volumes while oil prices were much higher than a year ago.

This result also fits a wider pattern in the energy sector this quarter. ConocoPhillips also reported profit more than doubling in the third quarter, helped by the same higher crude prices. For beginners, the lesson is not to chase one earnings report. It is to notice how a company makes its money. EOG earns more when oil prices rise and when it produces more oil and gas, and it earns less when prices fall. A dividend is paid from cash the business generates, so it can rise in good years and come under pressure in bad ones.

What to watch next

Watch whether oil prices stay near current levels, since EOG’s profit depends heavily on them. Watch the company’s fourth quarter production, which it expects to ease slightly from the record third quarter. And watch how much cash EOG keeps returning through dividends and buybacks, with $10.6 billion still left on its current share repurchase authorization at the end of September.

FAQ

What is EOG Resources?

EOG Resources is a US shale oil and gas producer based in Houston, Texas. It drills for crude oil, natural gas liquids, and natural gas, mainly in US shale fields.

What is a dividend?

A dividend is a cash payment a company makes to its shareholders, usually every quarter. It comes from the company’s profits or cash flow. A higher dividend means shareholders get more cash per share they own.

Why did EOG’s profit rise so much?

Two things helped. EOG produced record volumes of oil and gas, about 10% more than a year earlier, and the price it received for its crude oil rose to $86.72 per barrel from $65.95 a year earlier.

What is free cash flow?

Free cash flow is the cash a company has left after paying for the spending it needs to run and grow the business. EOG generated $2.2 billion of it in the quarter and used part of it for dividends and share buybacks.

Does a dividend rise mean the stock is a good buy?

No. A dividend rise shows the company is generating cash now, but it is not a promise about future prices or profits. Oil prices can fall, and a company’s fortunes can change quickly.
