Hong Kong Stock Exchange Profit Slips 0.8% in Q3 as Trading Cools

Direct answer

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, the company that runs Hong Kong’s stock exchange, reported a small fall in profit for the third quarter of 2026. Net profit was HK$4.86 billion, down 0.8% from a year earlier and below the HK$5.03 billion analysts had expected. Trading volumes cooled after a strong first half of the year, even though the first nine months of 2026 were still the best on record for the exchange.

What happened

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, known as HKEX, released its third quarter results on Friday, November 6, 2026. Net profit attributable to shareholders was HK$4.86 billion, about 620 million US dollars, down 0.8% from the same quarter last year. Analysts in a Visible Alpha poll had expected HK$5.03 billion, so the result missed the forecast.

Revenue and other income rose 1.2% from a year earlier to HK$7.87 billion, a smaller rise than expected. Earnings per share were HK$3.84.

The main reason for the softer quarter was quieter trading. Headline average daily turnover fell 11% from a year earlier to HK$254.2 billion, after trading had hit record highs in the second quarter. Cash market trading held up better, with average daily turnover there up 6% from a year earlier to HK$272.9 billion, but overall activity slowed.

HKEX shares fell about 1.7% by midday on Friday after the results, taking their loss for the year so far to around 5%.

The wider picture is still strong. For the first nine months of 2026, revenue reached HK$24.57 billion, up 12% from a year earlier, and profit reached HK$15.43 billion, up 15%. Both were records for a nine month period, helped by stronger cash trading, northbound trading with mainland China, commodities, and fundraising earlier in the year. Higher staff and technology costs also weighed on the third quarter result.

Citi Research analyst Michael Zhang had warned before the results that softer market sentiment and moderating equity trading would weigh on profits.

Hong Kong Exchanges third quarter 2026 key figures

Why it matters for beginners

A stock exchange makes most of its money from fees on trading. When investors trade less, the exchange earns less, so its profit can fall even while the market itself is doing fine. That is what happened here: trading cooled from very high levels, and profit slipped with it.

A small miss against forecasts can move a share price more than the headline number suggests. Profit fell only 0.8%, but the result was below what analysts expected, and the shares fell about 1.7% on the day. Markets react to the surprise, not just to the direction of the number.

Hong Kong stocks had jumped the day before, as covered in our report on the Hang Seng rally, so this result is about the exchange company itself, not about the whole Hong Kong market falling. One company result does not set the direction of a market.

What to watch next

Watch whether trading volumes recover in the fourth quarter. If volumes stay soft, the next quarter could be weak too, while a pickup in trading would lift fee income quickly.

Also watch the October US jobs report due on Friday, which could move global markets and trading activity, and whether Hong Kong stocks hold the gains they made after the US midterm elections.

FAQ

Why did profit fall if revenue rose?

Revenue rose only 1.2%, while costs rose faster, including staff and technology spending. When costs grow faster than income, profit falls even if revenue is up.

What is average daily turnover?

It is the average value of shares and other products traded on the exchange each day. It is the simplest way to see how busy the market is. A fall of 11% means noticeably quieter trading than a year earlier.

Does this mean Hong Kong’s market is in trouble?

No. The first nine months of 2026 set records for revenue and profit at HKEX, and cash market trading was still up from a year earlier. The third quarter was softer after a very strong first half, not a collapse.

Is this a buy or sell recommendation?

No. This article explains the news only. It does not recommend buying or selling any share.
