European Shares Fall as Global AI Sell-Off Deepens on November 6
European shares fell sharply on Friday, November 6, 2026. The pan-European STOXX 600 index dropped 1.6 percent, its steepest daily fall since July, as the sell-off in artificial intelligence stocks spread from Wall Street across the globe.
What happened
The STOXX 600 fell 1.6 percent to 644.72 points by 0810 GMT, wiping out its gains for the week. Germany’s DAX fell 1.7 percent, France’s CAC 40 lost 1.4 percent, Spain’s IBEX 35 fell 1 percent, and London’s FTSE 100 retreated 1.5 percent.
Media, healthcare, and retail shares led the declines, each falling more than 2 percent. Teleperformance, a French outsourcing firm, fell 18 percent after cutting its full-year revenue growth outlook.
The trigger was Thursday’s rout on Wall Street. The Nasdaq Composite fell 5.52 percent, its largest single-day loss in 19 months, and entered correction territory. The S&P 500 fell 4.4 percent, its worst day since April 2025, and the Nasdaq 100 fell 6.36 percent, wiping about 2.3 trillion dollars from its value. Asian markets fell first on Friday. South Korea’s KOSPI plunged and trading was halted, and Japan’s Nikkei fell more than 6 percent. Our explainer on the Asian session is here: https://investclaritypath.com/asia-stocks-crumble-kospi-plunges-circuit-breaker-november-2026/
Investors are worried about AI stocks after Democrats took control of the US Congress, raising the prospect of tighter rules for data centres. That fear has now hit chip makers, software firms, and equipment suppliers in Europe too.
Oil also fell. Brent crude dropped below 100 dollars a barrel and was heading for a weekly loss of more than 13 percent. Gold moved the other way and was on course for a weekly gain of more than 4 percent as investors looked for safety.
Even after Friday’s fall, European shares are still ahead for the year. The STOXX 600 is up more than 10 percent in 2026, compared with just over 7 percent for the S&P 500.
Why it matters for beginners
A correction means an index has fallen 10 percent or more from its recent high. It is a normal part of markets, but it can feel sharp when it happens fast.
When big US tech stocks fall, the effect spreads. European chip and software companies fell too, because investors sell similar shares everywhere at once.
Falling oil can help households and businesses, because energy costs less. Rising gold often means investors are nervous and want something they see as safer.
A single bad week does not decide the year. European shares were still up more than 10 percent in 2026 after Friday’s drop.
What to watch next
The US October jobs report, due at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time (13:30 GMT) on Friday. Forecasters expect about 65,000 new jobs and unemployment steady at 4.2 percent.
Whether US stock futures steady or fall further when Wall Street opens.
Any new signals from Washington about rules for AI data centres.
FAQ
What is the STOXX 600?
It is an index of 600 large companies across Europe, so it gives a broad picture of how European shares are doing.
What is a correction?
A fall of 10 percent or more from a recent high. The Nasdaq Composite entered correction territory after Thursday’s drop.
Why did European shares fall when the news came from the US?
Markets are connected. When US tech shares fall sharply, investors often sell similar shares in Europe and Asia too.
Does falling oil help beginners?
It can, because lower oil prices can mean lower fuel and heating costs, though the effect takes time to reach household bills.
