ConocoPhillips Profit More Than Doubles in Q3 2026 as Dividend Rises 11%
ConocoPhillips, one of the largest oil producers in the United States, earned $4.0 billion in the third quarter of 2026, more than double the $1.7 billion it earned a year earlier. The company also raised its quarterly dividend by 11%, to $0.93 per share.
What happened
ConocoPhillips reported its third quarter results on November 5, 2026. Earnings came in at $3.34 per share, up from $1.38 per share in the same quarter of 2025. After removing one-off items, mainly the reversal of a tax reserve, adjusted earnings were $3.27 per share, up from $1.61 a year earlier and above the $3.05 per share analysts had expected.
The main driver was price. ConocoPhillips sold its oil and gas at an average of $61.40 per barrel of oil equivalent, 32% higher than the $46.44 it received in the third quarter of 2025. Production was slightly lower, at 2,302 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day, down 97 thousand from a year earlier, but the higher price more than made up for it.
Cash from operations reached $7.2 billion in the quarter. The company returned $3.4 billion to shareholders, through $2.4 billion of share buybacks and $1.0 billion of dividends, and said it remains on track to return 45% of its operating cash flow to shareholders in 2026. It ended the quarter with $10.4 billion in cash and short-term investments.
The higher dividend of $0.93 per share will be paid on December 1, 2026, to shareholders on record at the close of business on November 16, 2026. The previous quarterly dividend was $0.84 per share.
Why it matters for beginners
A dividend is a cash payment a company makes to its shareholders, usually every three months. When a company raises its dividend, it is a sign that management feels confident about future cash flow. A buyback is when a company buys its own shares, which can lift the value of the shares that remain.
Energy companies are different from most businesses because their profits depend heavily on the oil price, which they cannot control. In this quarter, higher prices did most of the work. That also means profits can fall just as fast when prices drop. Oil prices have fallen sharply this week, with Brent crude dropping below $100 a barrel after the US midterm elections, so the next quarter may look very different.
For a beginner, the lesson is simple. A single strong quarter tells you how the business did in those three months, not how it will do next year. Dividends and buybacks matter, but they are paid out of cash flow, and cash flow in oil depends on the oil price.
What to watch next
ConocoPhillips guided fourth quarter production of 2.32 to 2.36 million barrels of oil equivalent per day. Watch whether oil prices stay low after the midterm result, because that would squeeze the next quarter’s earnings. Also watch the company’s conference call and any update on its 2027 spending plans.
