DBS Profit Falls 5% in Q3 as Trading Income Slumps

Direct answer

DBS Group, the largest bank in Southeast Asia, made less money in the third quarter of 2026. Net profit fell 5% from a year earlier to S$2.81 billion, below the S$2.90 billion analysts expected, because income from trading in financial markets dropped 65%.

What happened

DBS reported the results on November 5, 2026, for the three months to September 30. Net profit was S$2.81 billion, down from S$2.95 billion a year earlier and down 9% from the previous quarter. The result missed the average analyst forecast of S$2.90 billion compiled by LSEG, and it also came in below a Bloomberg survey figure of about S$2.95 billion.

The main drag was markets trading income, which fell 65% from a year earlier to S$152 million, down from S$439 million. It was also 68% lower than in the previous quarter. DBS blamed unfavourable equity market conditions, and its chief executive also pointed to softer Asian asset markets and a sharp rise in interest rates late in the quarter.

Total income slipped 1% from a year earlier to S$5.85 billion. The stronger parts of the business held up. Net interest income rose 4% to S$3.71 billion, although the net interest margin narrowed to 1.87% from 1.96% a year earlier. Net fee income rose 6% to S$1.43 billion, and wealth management fees rose 9% to S$864 million.

For the first nine months of 2026, DBS profit reached a record S$8.82 billion. The bank also raised its quarterly dividend. The total third quarter dividend was S$0.81 per share, up from S$0.75 a year earlier.

Looking ahead, DBS expects total income to grow in the mid single digit range in 2027. That outlook assumes two further US Federal Reserve interest rate hikes by the end of next year. Chief Executive Tan Su Shan said the outlook had become more uncertain because of elevated energy prices, tighter financial conditions and geopolitical risks. DBS is also considering a move into prime brokerage, a service for hedge funds and other large institutional investors.

Why it matters for beginners

A bank earns money in a few different ways. It earns interest on loans, it charges fees for services such as wealth management, and it earns trading income from buying and selling shares, bonds and currencies. When one part falls sharply, it can pull the whole result down even if lending grows.

Trading income is the most volatile part of a bank’s earnings. A 65% drop shows how quickly market swings can hit a bank’s profits, and it is a useful reminder that a single quarter can look very different from the full year. DBS still reported a record nine month profit, and it raised its dividend, which shows the core business stayed strong.

Singapore is a major financial centre, so DBS results are a useful health check on Asian banking. The pattern matches its rival UOB, which also missed forecasts this quarter as trading income fell. You can read our earlier post on UOB Profit Misses Forecasts as Margin Pressure Hits Shares for the comparison.

It also shows how US interest rates reach far beyond the United States. DBS is building two more Fed rate hikes into its 2027 plans, so the Fed’s next decisions matter for banks in Asia too. What to watch next

Watch OCBC, the third of Singapore’s big three banks, when it reports, to see whether the same trading weakness shows up there. Watch whether DBS trading income recovers in the fourth quarter as markets settle. Watch the Federal Reserve’s December decision, since DBS expects two more hikes by the end of next year. And watch for more detail on the prime brokerage plan, which would be a new line of business for the bank.

FAQ

What is DBS?

DBS Group is Singapore’s largest bank and the largest bank in Southeast Asia. It lends to households and businesses and offers wealth management and other banking services.

What is trading income?

It is money a bank makes from buying and selling shares, bonds and currencies in financial markets. It can swing sharply from quarter to quarter, so it is the least predictable part of a bank’s earnings.

What is a net interest margin?

It is the gap between what a bank earns on loans and what it pays for funding, such as deposits, shown as a percentage. A narrower margin means lending is less profitable.

Did DBS cut its dividend?

No. The total third quarter dividend rose to S$0.81 per share, up from S$0.75 a year earlier.

Why did profit fall if lending income grew?

Net interest income rose 4%, but the 65% drop in trading income was large enough to pull total profit down. A single weak line can outweigh growth elsewhere.

What is prime brokerage?

It is a package of services banks offer to hedge funds and other large investors, including lending, custody and trade execution. DBS is considering whether to build this business.
