BD Beats Q4 Earnings Forecasts, but Shares Fall on a Cautious 2027 Outlook

In short

BD, the medical technology company Becton, Dickinson and Company, reported a strong final quarter of fiscal 2026 on November 5, 2026, with revenue of $5.27 billion and adjusted earnings of $4.15 per share, both ahead of forecasts. But shares fell about 6.4% in pre-market trading, because the company’s outlook for fiscal 2027 was softer than investors had hoped.

What happened

BD’s fourth quarter, which ended September 30, 2026, was its strongest of the year. Revenue rose 5.4% to $5.27 billion, and adjusted earnings per share climbed 27.3% to $4.15, from $3.26 a year earlier. On a GAAP basis, earnings per share more than doubled to $2.52 from $1.20. For the full fiscal year, revenue rose 4.9% to $19.46 billion, adjusted earnings per share rose 6.7% to $12.70, and free cash flow jumped 42.5% to $2.9 billion.

The figures are for continuing operations. BD spun off its former Biosciences and Diagnostic Solutions business and combined it with Waters Corporation in February 2026, so the older numbers were restated to match the slimmer company.

The problem was the outlook. BD guided fiscal 2027 revenue growth to low single digits and adjusted earnings per share to $13.10 to $13.30, growth of only 3.1% to 4.7% over fiscal 2026. That is slower than the 6.7% growth just reported. Zacks reported that the weak guidance sent the shares down 6.4% in pre-market trading, even though the quarter itself beat forecasts.

Management pointed to a roughly 200 basis point drag from weaker Alaris infusion pump capital sales, plus tariff and currency pressures. On the brighter side, the company said it plans to invest $19 billion in the United States over several years, including $3 billion for manufacturing expansion. The board also raised the quarterly dividend 1% to $1.06 per share and authorized buying back up to 10 million shares, about 3.6% of shares outstanding.

Why it matters for beginners

This is a useful lesson in how the stock market works. A company can beat expectations and still see its shares fall, because investors were already expecting the good quarter and are really judging the future. Guidance, which is management’s forecast for the year ahead, often moves a stock more than the results themselves.

BD is also a good example of a steady, less flashy business. It makes syringes, catheters, diagnostic tools, and hospital equipment, products hospitals need in good times and bad. That kind of demand is steadier than a consumer gadget or a hot new app, which is why many beginners learn about health care stocks as part of a diversified portfolio. But steady demand does not mean the share price cannot fall when growth slows.

What to watch next

Watch BD’s Investor Day on December 10, 2026, when management is expected to give more detail on its plans for fiscal 2028, including mid-single-digit growth and margin expansion. Also watch the first quarter of fiscal 2027, where management expects revenue growth at the low end of its range and earnings of $2.32 to $2.37 per share. If hospital spending and the Alaris business recover faster than expected, the outlook could improve, but if tariffs or weak capital spending persist, guidance may stay cautious.

FAQ

What is BD?

BD, short for Becton, Dickinson and Company, is a global medical technology company. It makes products used in hospitals and labs, such as syringes, catheters, infusion pumps, and diagnostic equipment.

What is adjusted earnings per share?

It is a company’s profit per share after stripping out one-off items, such as restructuring costs or separation charges. Companies report it alongside GAAP earnings, which follow standard accounting rules, to show the underlying trend of the business.

Why did BD shares fall if earnings beat forecasts?

Because the outlook disappointed. The quarter beat expectations, but management guided fiscal 2027 earnings growth of only 3.1% to 4.7%, slower than the year just finished. Investors had priced in faster growth, so the shares dropped even though the reported numbers were strong.

What is a share buyback?

It is when a company buys its own shares back from the market. BD authorized repurchases of up to 10 million shares. Buybacks can support the share price and raise earnings per share, because the same profit is spread over fewer shares.
