US Private Payrolls Rise by 86,000 in October, Beating Expectations

Direct answer

US private employers added 86,000 jobs in October 2026. That was more than the 69,000 jobs economists expected, and it matched the revised September figure. For beginners, the simple reading is steady hiring, not a hiring boom and not a hiring freeze.

What happened

ADP reported the result on November 4, 2026, in the ADP National Employment Report, produced with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab. The report is based on payroll data for more than 26 million private sector workers in the United States.

Hiring was broad. Service providing industries added 82,000 jobs, while goods producing industries added 4,000 jobs. Trade, transportation, and utilities added 39,000 jobs, education and health services added 28,000 jobs, leisure and hospitality added 19,000 jobs, and financial activities added 15,000 jobs. The South added 47,000 jobs and the West added 28,000 jobs.

There were weak spots too. Professional and business services lost 27,000 jobs, the third straight monthly fall in that sector. Manufacturing lost 1,000 jobs, information lost 2,000 jobs, and natural resources and mining lost 8,000 jobs. Small firms added 28,000 jobs, medium firms added 33,000 jobs, and large firms added 24,000 jobs.

September was revised down, from 90,000 jobs to 86,000 jobs. So October did not beat a higher September number. It matched it.

Pay growth was steady. Base pay rose 3.2% over the year, and gross pay rose 4.7%. Pay for workers who stayed in their jobs rose 3.0% in base pay terms, while pay for workers who changed jobs rose 4.8%. ADP chief economist Nela Richardson said employers of all sizes were hiring, and job changers were attracted by bonuses, overtime, and more hours as well as higher base pay. She said earnings growth for those workers hit its fastest pace since March 2024.

ADP reported the result, and FXStreet reported the same headline figure, 86,000 jobs against a 69,000 expectation, with the same revised September figure.

Why it matters for beginners

Jobs data matters because paychecks drive spending, and spending drives much of the economy. When hiring holds up, households are more likely to keep spending. When hiring weakens sharply, spending and confidence can fall with it.

This report also matters for interest rates. The Federal Reserve watches jobs and pay closely. Strong hiring with steady pay growth does not force a rate move on its own, but it can support the case for keeping rates higher for longer if inflation stays high. For context on recent pay pressure, see the earlier post on US labor costs in the third quarter: https://investclaritypath.com/us-labor-costs-rose-q3-2026/

One caution is important. ADP covers private sector jobs only. It is not the official government jobs report, and it does not always match that report closely. Treat it as an early signal, not the final word.

What to watch next

Watch the official US jobs report on Friday, November 6, 2026. That report will cover both private and government jobs, plus unemployment and wage growth. Also watch the next inflation reports and the Federal Reserve meeting on December 8 to 9, 2026. If hiring stays steady while inflation stays high, the debate about another rate rise will stay open.

FAQ

What is the ADP report? It is a monthly private sector jobs report based on payroll data, produced by ADP Research with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab.

Does 86,000 jobs mean the job market is strong? It means hiring was solid in October and better than expected, but one month does not prove a trend, especially with a weak spot in professional and business services.

Why was September revised? ADP revises earlier figures as more payroll data arrives. The September figure was revised from 90,000 to 86,000.

What is the difference between base pay and gross pay? Base pay is the basic salary or hourly rate. Gross pay includes bonuses, overtime, and other extra pay, which is why gross pay growth was higher in this report.
