India Services Growth Hits 4-Month High in October as Hiring Slows
In short: India’s services sector grew at its fastest pace in four months in October 2026. The HSBC India Services Purchasing Managers’ Index rose to 55.8, up from 55.2 in September. A reading above 50 means growth, so services kept expanding. The softer side of the report was hiring, which slowed, and export orders, which grew at their slowest pace since February 2023.
What happened
Reuters reported that stronger domestic demand lifted new business in October. The survey is compiled by S&P Global and is based on responses from about 400 service companies in India. Finance and insurance led growth in both new business and output, according to the survey report.
The headline reading was a little below the early flash estimate of 56.2, but it was still the highest in four months. The wider private sector also improved. The HSBC India Composite PMI, which covers manufacturing and services together, rose to 56.2 in October from 55.9 in September, also its fastest expansion in four months.
Two details point to caution. First, hiring growth eased to its weakest pace since June, and it was only fractional overall. Second, new export orders grew at their slowest pace since February 2023, which suggests weaker demand from abroad even as home demand held up.
Cost pressure also eased. Input cost inflation fell to its lowest level in more than six years, and the survey report described input costs rising at the weakest pace since August 2020. Selling prices rose only marginally, with fewer than 3 percent of service providers raising prices at the start of the quarter.
Why it matters for beginners
A PMI is a survey, not a count of money spent. Purchasing managers say whether conditions got better, stayed the same, or got worse, and those answers are turned into a number. Above 50 means more managers reported improvement than decline. So 55.8 means solid growth, not just a small gain.
Services matter a lot in everyday life. The sector covers shops, restaurants, health care, transport, finance, and professional services. When services grow, it usually means more people are buying, booking, and using those services.
For beginners, the split in this report is the useful lesson. Strong home demand can lift the headline number even while hiring and export orders soften. That is why one number is never the whole story. It also helps to compare countries. In the United States, services growth cooled slightly in October, as explained in our post on US services growth cooling in October 2026, while prices stayed high. India’s report moved in the other direction on growth, with cost pressure easing instead.
What to watch next
Watch whether hiring picks up again in the next survey, or whether firms keep holding back because they have enough capacity for current demand. Watch export orders too. If foreign demand stays weak, services growth will depend even more on home spending.
Watch India’s central bank as well. The Reserve Bank of India raised its repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50 percent on October 7 and shifted its stance to calibrated tightening. Softer cost pressure could give policymakers more room, but a strong headline PMI on its own does not decide the next rate move.
FAQ
What is the HSBC India Services PMI?
It is a monthly survey of purchasing managers at about 400 service companies in India, compiled by S&P Global for HSBC. It asks whether business conditions improved, stayed the same, or got worse compared with the previous month.
What does a reading of 55.8 mean?
It means services activity expanded in October, because the reading is above 50. It also means expansion was faster than in September, when the reading was 55.2, and it was the fastest pace in four months.
Why did hiring slow if growth improved?
The survey report said employment growth eased to its weakest pace since June. One explanation given was that some service businesses already had enough capacity to meet current staffing needs, so they did not need to hire as fast even as new business improved.
Does this report mean India’s economy is booming?
No. It is one survey for one month, and it covers services only. The composite PMI also rose, which is a good sign, but hiring and export orders softened, so the picture is mixed rather than uniformly strong.
