Google to Invest $15 Billion in Malaysia Data Centres Over Two Years

Google will invest $15 billion in Malaysia in 2027 and 2028 to build new data centre campuses and the clean energy and water facilities they need, Reuters reported on November 4, 2026. It is the latest big bet by a tech giant on the computing power behind artificial intelligence, and one of the largest foreign investments Malaysia has attracted for digital infrastructure.

What happened

Google, the main business of Alphabet, announced the plan at an event in Kuala Lumpur. Ruth Porat, president and chief investment officer of Alphabet and Google, presented the commitment alongside Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The money will go to new data centre campuses in the states of Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, in addition to Google’s first Malaysian campus at Elmina Business Park in Selangor, which is already running. The spending also covers clean energy projects, water security and training for local workers.

Google said it plans to add more than 1 gigawatt of clean energy capacity to Malaysia’s national grid, and it will pay for all of the electricity its campuses use, plus the direct cost of connecting them to the grid. Google estimates the construction work will add an average of $1.1 billion a year to Malaysia’s economy and support more than 37,000 local jobs during the building phase. The company also plans to train 800,000 Malaysians over five years.

The plan builds on $2 billion Google pledged in 2024 for its first Malaysian data centre and cloud region. We covered a similar move in the United States in our earlier post on Google’s $17 billion Wyoming data centre deal.

Why it matters for beginners

Data centres are the buildings full of computers that run search, video, cloud services and AI tools. As AI use grows, tech companies need more of them, and each one uses a lot of power and water.

That is why the details matter as much as the headline number. Google is not only paying for buildings. It is paying for the power plants and water systems around them, which is becoming a standard part of big AI deals.

For Malaysia, the investment brings jobs, construction work and new infrastructure. For investors, it is another sign that the AI spending race is spreading beyond the United States, with Southeast Asia now a major destination.

What to watch next

Watch for construction start dates and completion timelines for the new campuses in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. Watch whether other big tech companies announce similar projects in Malaysia or nearby countries, which would show how fast the region is becoming an AI hub. And watch Google’s total capital spending in its next results, which will show how much of this $15 billion is new spending and how much was already planned.

FAQ

What is a data centre?

A data centre is a large building filled with computers and storage that keeps websites, apps and cloud services running. AI tools need especially powerful data centres.

Why does Google need clean energy and water for data centres?

Data centres use large amounts of electricity and water for cooling. Adding clean energy and securing water supplies helps the facilities run reliably without straining local resources.

Is the $15 billion being spent now?

No. The investment covers 2027 and 2028. It is a commitment for future spending, not money already spent or buildings already finished.
