European Shares Rise After US Midterms as Banks and Clean Energy Lead
Direct answer
European shares rose on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, after Democrats won control of both chambers of the United States Congress. Banks and clean energy stocks led the gains, while defence stocks lagged and technology shares were mixed.
What happened
Reuters reported that the pan-European STOXX 600 index advanced nearly 1 percent by 0927 GMT. The market had started the day lower. Futures tracking the STOXX 600 fell as much as 1.4 percent earlier on Wednesday, then recovered after the election result became clear and after United States President Donald Trump accepted the results.
Banks were the strongest sector. The Euro STOXX banks index rose nearly 4 percent. Lender focused benchmarks in Italy and Spain climbed 2.2 percent and 1.6 percent. Investors moved into domestically focused lenders that had lagged the wider market for much of the year.
Clean energy stocks were also among the biggest gainers, after facing pressure from United States policy. Vestas jumped 4 percent, Orsted gained 6.7 percent, and Nordex surged 5.3 percent.
Novo Nordisk advanced 4.2 percent after the Wegovy maker reported third quarter adjusted operating profit above expectations and raised its full year sales and profit forecasts. Continental gained 6.7 percent after raising its 2026 profitability outlook, and Heidelberg Materials advanced 9 percent after reporting higher than expected third quarter sales.
Technology was mixed. Infineon was flat and ASML slipped 1.3 percent, while Siemens Energy shed 2.7 percent and Schneider Electric fell 1.1 percent. The defence sector was the top laggard, down about 1 percent.
In currencies, the euro firmed 0.5 percent to 1.1249 dollars in early trading, in the separate Reuters market report on the election reaction.
Why it matters for beginners
Think of an index such as the STOXX 600 as a basket that tracks many large European companies at once. When the basket rises, it means a broad group of companies rose together, not just one company.
Banks rose for a simple reason that helps beginners understand market mood. One strategist said a Democratic Congress limits the ability of the United States administration to impose requirements or sanctions on European banks in the United States. That reduced a worry for lenders, so investors bought bank shares.
Clean energy shares rose because the election result changed expectations about United States policy pressure on that sector. A one day move does not mean a trend will continue, and it does not make any sector safe.
What to watch next

Frequently asked questions
What is the STOXX 600?
It is a broad index that tracks 600 large, mid sized, and small companies across Europe. It is used as a simple gauge of how European shares are doing as a whole.
Does a Democratic Congress change company profits right away?
No. An election result changes expectations about policy, taxes, regulation, and spending. It does not change a company profit on the same day. Markets move first on expectations, and company results follow later.
Does a one day rise mean European shares will keep rising?
No. One day can reflect relief after uncertainty, or a change in mood. Prices can fall again if new data, company results, or policy news change the outlook.
