Continental Raises 2026 Outlook as Tyre Business Beats Expectations
Direct answer: Continental raised its profit outlook for 2026 on November 4, 2026, because its tyre business performed better than expected in the third quarter, even though sales fell and raw material costs are rising.
What happened
Continental, a German car parts supplier based in Hanover, reported third quarter adjusted profit before interest and taxes of 514 million euros. That was up 6.7 percent from 482 million euros a year earlier, and above the 480 million euro figure analysts expected, according to Reuters coverage of the results.
The adjusted profit margin rose to 14.9 percent, up from 13.9 percent in the same quarter last year. Consolidated sales for continuing operations were 3.5 billion euros, down from 3.9 billion euros a year earlier. Net income for continuing and discontinued operations was 349 million euros, compared with a loss of 756 million euros a year earlier.
The company said strong demand for high margin tyres drove the result. Chief Executive Christian Kötz said the company delivered another very good quarter in the tyre business and heads into the final stretch of the year in a strong position, in Continental’s own results release.
For the full year, Continental now expects an adjusted profit margin of about 13.4 to 14.0 percent for continuing operations, up from a previous range of 12.0 to 13.5 percent. It also raised its expected adjusted free cash flow to about 1.0 to 1.3 billion euros, and expects sales of about 13.5 to 13.9 billion euros. The outlook excludes ContiTech, which is treated as discontinued operations ahead of a planned sale.
Why it matters for beginners
An outlook is a company’s best estimate for the year ahead. When a company raises its outlook, it is saying it now expects to be more profitable than it previously forecast. That does not guarantee the result, because costs and demand can still change.
This case also shows why profit and sales can move in different directions. Sales fell, yet profit rose, because Continental sold more higher margin tyres. Margin means how much profit a company keeps from each euro of sales, so a better product mix can lift profit even when total sales fall.
For car industry watchers, the contrast with other car makers matters too. BMW warned this week that its car business could slip into a loss, which shows that conditions in the wider car industry remain uneven even when one supplier does well. What to watch next
Watch whether higher raw material costs bite harder in the fourth quarter. Continental uses oil based materials to make synthetic rubber, and its finance chief warned that rising raw material prices will weigh more heavily in the final quarter. Oil prices and tyre demand in winter will also matter, since winter tyres are an important seasonal product.
Also watch the planned ContiTech sale and the next full year results, which will show whether the raised outlook was met. A raised outlook is a forecast, not a finished result. FAQ
What is adjusted profit?
Adjusted profit is profit after removing one off items that management says do not reflect normal trading. It helps compare quarters, but it is not the same as the headline net income figure, so check both.
Why did Continental raise its outlook if sales fell?
Because profit depends on what a company sells, not only how much it sells. Strong sales of higher margin tyres lifted profit and margin, which supported a higher full year forecast.
Does a raised outlook mean the shares will rise?
Not necessarily. Share prices react to many things, including the wider market, interest rates, and whether investors already expected the improvement. An outlook is useful information, but it is not a prediction about the share price.
