China Blocks SoftBank’s $5.4 Billion Takeover of ABB Robotics
China has blocked SoftBank’s $5.4 billion plan to buy the robotics division of Swiss engineering group ABB. ABB confirmed the news on Thursday, November 5, 2026. The deal is not fully dead yet, but its future is now uncertain.
What happened
In October 2025, ABB agreed to sell its Robotics division to SoftBank for $5.375 billion. On November 5, 2026, ABB said SoftBank had told it that China’s foreign investment security review office had prohibited the acquisition of the ABB Robotics business in China.
The news was first reported by the Financial Times and then by Reuters. China’s National Development and Reform Commission, the state planner that reviews foreign investment, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. SoftBank declined to comment.
ABB said the two companies are in close dialogue and are working constructively on the transaction. That wording matters, because the block covers the business in China, and ABB stopped short of saying the whole deal is over.
ABB shares fell 1.1 percent in morning trading after the news became public.
Why it matters for beginners
Big deals can be stopped by governments, not just by buyers and sellers. When a company plans to spend billions on an acquisition, regulators in key markets can still say no.
China is ABB’s biggest robotics market, at about 30 percent of its robot-related business. Losing that part changes the value of the deal.
The deal was central to SoftBank’s push into robotics and artificial intelligence. SoftBank chief executive Masayoshi Son has called robotics a core part of the company’s AI strategy.
The reported worry, according to the Financial Times, was data. The concern was that robotics data could be sent overseas and used to train AI models, including those built by OpenAI, in which SoftBank is a major investor. That reason has not been confirmed in any official Chinese announcement.
This is the second major deal China has blocked this year, after Meta was ordered to unwind its acquisition of AI startup Manus, which was worth more than $2 billion.
For beginners, the lesson is simple. A single company, deal, or country can carry more risk than it first seems. That is why spreading investments matters, and our guide to diversification explains the idea in plain terms.
