Monster Beverage Sales Jump 17% but Shares Fall After Q3 Results
Direct answer
Monster Beverage sold a record $2.56 billion worth of drinks in the third quarter of 2026, up 17% from a year earlier, but its shares still fell about 6% in after-hours trading. Sales were strong, yet profit margins got thinner, and that is what investors focused on.
What happened
Monster reported its third-quarter results after the US market closed on Thursday, November 5, 2026. Net sales rose 16.7% to $2.56 billion, a record quarter, and above the roughly $2.49 billion analysts had expected.
Net income rose 8.4% to $568.4 million, up from $524.5 million a year earlier. Diluted earnings per share rose to $0.29 from $0.27, while adjusted earnings per share of $0.30 matched what analysts expected, according to Reuters and dpa-AFX reports.
Growth came mostly from outside the United States. International sales jumped 28.1% to $1.20 billion, or 47% of total sales. Sales of Monster Energy Drinks rose 17.1% to $2.37 billion, and Strategic Brands sales rose 19.8% to $156.4 million. The company sold 304.9 million cases of energy drinks, up from 258.4 million a year earlier.
The weak spot was profit margin. Gross margin fell to 54.7% from 55.7% a year earlier, as higher aluminum and freight costs and a shift in where sales came from outweighed price rises. Operating income still rose 6.4% to $718.7 million.
Shares fell about 6% in after-hours trading to $44.87, after closing the regular session down about 2% at $47.83.
For the first nine months of 2026, Monster reported net sales of $7.45 billion and net income of $1.72 billion.
Why it matters for beginners
This result shows that strong sales alone do not always lift a share price. Investors also look at how much profit a company keeps from each sale. When costs rise faster than prices, margins shrink, and the market can punish the stock even after a record sales quarter.
It also shows how much one earnings report can move a single stock. A fall of about 6% in one evening is normal for an individual company after results. That is one reason many beginners prefer to spread their money across many companies instead of betting on one. Our guide to what an index fund is and why beginners use it explains how a single purchase can hold a whole basket of companies at once.
Finally, the result shows that demand for energy drinks is still growing, and growing fastest outside the United States, where sales rose by more than a quarter.
What to watch next
Watch whether Monster can protect its margins in the fourth quarter, as aluminum and freight costs remain high. Watch holiday season demand for energy drinks, and whether international sales keep growing at a similar pace. The next results will show whether thinner margins were a one-quarter squeeze or a longer problem.
Frequently asked questions
Did Monster beat expectations?
Yes on sales, and in line on profit. Net sales of $2.56 billion beat the roughly $2.49 billion analysts expected, while adjusted earnings per share of $0.30 matched expectations.
Why did the shares fall if sales were so strong?
Because profit margins narrowed. Gross margin fell to 54.7% from 55.7%, as higher aluminum, freight, and mix costs ate into the extra sales. Investors care about profit, not sales alone.
What does Monster Beverage sell?
Monster is best known for Monster Energy drinks. It also sells other energy drink brands under its Strategic Brands segment, plus a smaller alcohol brands business.
