Edwards Lifesciences Beats Q3 Estimates and Raises Its 2026 Outlook

Edwards Lifesciences beat Wall Street expectations in the third quarter of 2026 and raised its outlook for the rest of the year. The medical technology company reported sales of $1.72 billion, up 10.5 percent from a year earlier, and adjusted earnings of $0.80 per share, up 19 percent. Both numbers came in above what analysts expected. Shares rose nearly 2.2 percent in after-hours trading after the results were released on November 4.

What happened

Edwards makes devices that treat heart disease, including replacement heart valves that doctors can implant without open-heart surgery. Its largest business is called TAVR, short for transcatheter aortic valve replacement. TAVR sales reached $1.24 billion in the quarter, up 8 percent from a year earlier.

Its fastest growing business is a newer group of treatments for the mitral and tricuspid heart valves, called TMTT. Sales there jumped 44 percent to $207 million. Its surgical business, which sells traditional heart surgery products, grew 3 percent to $264 million.

On the headline profit figure, Edwards reported earnings of $0.53 per share, much lower than the $0.80 adjusted figure. The gap comes from a $220.2 million charge in the quarter, mostly for writing down the value of a research project and some fixed assets. Adjusted earnings leave out one-off items like that, which is why analysts focus on the $0.80 number.

The company also raised its guidance. It now expects full-year 2026 sales to grow about 11.5 percent, up from 10 to 11 percent before, and adjusted earnings of $2.97 to $3.05 per share. For the fourth quarter, it projects sales of $1.67 to $1.75 billion and adjusted earnings of $0.61 to $0.69 per share. Edwards ended the quarter with about $3.1 billion in cash and about $600 million in debt, after buying back about $700 million of its own shares so far this year.

Why it matters for beginners

A company beats estimates when its results come in better than the forecasts analysts published before the report. That usually lifts the share price, at least in the short term, because it tells investors the business is doing better than expected.

This report also shows why guidance matters as much as the past quarter. Edwards did not just report good numbers, it told investors it expects the rest of the year to be stronger too. When a company raises its outlook, it is saying management sees demand holding up.

It is also a useful example of why you should look past the headline earnings number. The reported profit of $0.53 per share looked weak next to $0.80, but the difference was a one-off charge, not a problem with the underlying business. Learning to check whether a profit miss or beat comes from the core business or from one-off items is a basic skill for reading earnings reports, and it is closely tied to understanding what risk in investing really means.

What to watch next

Watch whether hospitals keep ordering more of the newer TMTT devices, since that business grew 44 percent and is now a bigger part of the growth story. Watch the fourth quarter results against the new guidance of $1.67 to $1.75 billion in sales. And watch the full-year adjusted earnings range of $2.97 to $3.05 per share, since the company will need a strong finish to land inside it.
