Daimler Truck Profit Jumps 73% in Q3 as North America Demand Recovers

Direct answer

Daimler Truck, one of the world’s biggest truck makers, reported a strong third quarter. Adjusted operating profit rose 73% to 1.12 billion euros, helped by a sharp recovery in North American truck demand. But new orders came in weaker than expected, and the shares fell as much as 8.3% on the news.

What happened

Daimler Truck reported its third quarter results on November 6, 2026. Adjusted operating profit was 1.12 billion euros, up from 648 million euros a year earlier, and slightly above the 1.10 billion euro forecast in a company-compiled consensus, according to Reuters.

Revenue in the industrial business rose 20% to 11.6 billion euros, from 9.7 billion euros a year earlier. The adjusted return on sales, which measures profit as a share of sales, improved to 9.1% from 6.2%.

North America did most of the heavy lifting. Trucks North America, the company’s biggest market, saw adjusted operating profit jump 169% to 691 million euros, from 257 million euros a year ago. Its margin reached 12.1%, up from 6.4%, and unit sales rose 51% to 45,629 trucks.

Net profit rose 73% to 702 million euros, and earnings per share rose to 0.91 euros from 0.51 euros. Free cash flow in the industrial business reached 974 million euros.

The weak spot was orders. Group order intake missed expectations by 9%, including a 16% shortfall in North America. Orders have now trailed deliveries for a second straight quarter, which limits how clearly the company can see future demand.

Daimler Truck kept its full-year 2026 guidance unchanged. It still expects industrial revenue of 43 billion to 47 billion euros, an adjusted return on sales of 7% to 9%, and free cash flow of 3 billion to 3.5 billion euros.

Why it matters for beginners

A profit jump and a falling share price can happen on the same day, and this is a good example of why. Investors were pleased with the quarter itself, but they were more worried about what comes next. When new orders fall short, it can mean slower sales in the months ahead, so the market looked past the strong profit number.

Truck demand is also a useful window into the wider economy. When companies buy more trucks, it usually means they expect more goods to move. A 51% jump in North American truck sales points to a real pickup in freight demand, even if orders have not yet caught up.

Margins matter too. A margin of 12.1% in North America, up from 6.4% a year ago, means the company kept much more of each euro of sales as profit. That is the part of the result that shows the business itself is running better, not just selling more.

Cummins, another maker of truck engines and power equipment, also reported a strong third quarter this week, with record margins. You can read about its results in our post on Cummins revenue jumping 13% in Q3.

What to watch next

  • Fourth quarter results, and whether North American orders start to catch up with deliveries.
  • The North American truck margin, which management expects to be near the top of its 9% to 11% annual guidance range in the fourth quarter, below the 12.1% just reported.
  • Whether the company can meet its full-year guidance for revenue of 43 billion to 47 billion euros and an adjusted return on sales of 7% to 9%.

FAQ

What does Daimler Truck do?

Daimler Truck makes trucks and buses, including Freightliner and Western Star trucks in North America and Mercedes-Benz trucks in Europe and other regions. It is one of the world’s largest commercial vehicle makers.

Why did the shares fall if profit jumped 73%?

Because new orders missed expectations by 9%, with a 16% shortfall in North America. Investors worried that weaker orders today could mean slower sales next year, so they sold the shares even though the quarter itself was strong.

What is adjusted operating profit?

It is profit from the company’s main business before interest and tax, with one-off items stripped out. It helps investors compare the underlying business from one year to the next without unusual items getting in the way.

What is a return on sales?

It is profit as a percentage of sales. A higher return on sales means the company keeps more from each euro of sales as profit.
