Direct answer
Reliance Industries, India’s largest listed company, reported a record profit for the July to September 2026 quarter, helped by strong refining earnings and growth in its digital business. Profit after tax reached 29,550 crore rupees, up 33.8 percent from a year earlier, while revenue rose 27.8 percent to a record 3.62 lakh crore rupees.
What happened
Reliance reported its results for the September quarter of financial year 2026-27 on October 30, 2026. Reuters reported that profit beat analysts’ expectations, with the average forecast at 214.19 billion rupees. Profit attributable to the company’s owners was 25,548 crore rupees, up 40.6 percent from 18,165 crore rupees a year earlier.
The biggest driver was the oil to chemicals business, which turns crude oil into fuels and petrochemicals. Its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation, known as EBITDA, jumped 67.9 percent to a record 25,203 crore rupees, as tighter global fuel markets lifted refining margins. Overall EBITDA rose 23.9 percent to a record 62,409 crore rupees.
Jio Platforms, the group’s digital and telecom business, also grew. Its core earnings rose 16.6 percent, and revenue rose 11.3 percent to 47,485 crore rupees. Jio had just completed India’s largest initial public offering, worth 30,188 crore rupees, on October 28, 2026.
Retail was the weak spot. Reliance Retail’s profit fell 24.3 percent to 2,611 crore rupees, partly because of a 1.08 billion rupee impairment linked to its 7-Eleven business and higher spending on e-commerce. Capital spending for the quarter was 38,153 crore rupees, and net debt fell to 1.17 lakh crore rupees from 1.23 lakh crore rupees at the end of June.
Why it matters for beginners
A company like Reliance shows why diversification matters. When one part of a business struggles, another part can carry the quarter. Here, strong refining margins more than made up for weaker retail profit.
Refining margins are simply the difference between what a refiner pays for crude oil and what it earns from selling fuels. When fuel markets tighten, that gap widens, and refiners earn more. That is what happened this quarter, and it connects to the same energy pressures seen in rising oil prices, which we covered in our post on oil jumping above 117 dollars after the Strait of Hormuz tanker attack: https://investclaritypath.com/oil-jumps-above-117-hormuz-tanker-attack/
A record profit does not mean a company’s shares will rise, or that every part of the business is healthy. Retail profit fell, and the company is still spending heavily on new energy and consumer businesses. Results like this are one quarter’s snapshot, not a promise about the future.
What to watch next
Watch whether refining margins stay strong or ease as fuel markets settle. Watch Jio’s first results as a separately listed company, and whether retail profit recovers after its e-commerce spending. The next quarterly update will show whether this record quarter was a one off boost from fuel markets or part of a steadier trend.
FAQ
What is Reliance Industries?
Reliance Industries is India’s largest listed company by market value. It runs oil refining and petrochemicals, telecom and digital services through Jio Platforms, and a large retail business.
What does record profit mean here?
It means the company’s profit for this quarter was higher than in any previous quarter on a recurring basis. Profit after tax was 29,550 crore rupees, and profit attributable to owners was 25,548 crore rupees.
Why did refining earnings jump so much?
Tighter global fuel markets and stronger fuel margins lifted earnings.
